TO A FISH

This sad, dead fish
that I eat to mark
the martyrdom
of Saint Demetrios - this
sad
dead
fish
represents
in the tins neatly stacked
on the supermarket shelves
the loss of the sea,
the sea that I often
evoke as an image
of consciousness,
arguing that consciousness
is not in us, but we
are in it,
as fish in the sea.
So then can we
better be likened
to fish, neatly stacked
on supermarket shelves,
waiting to be eaten
by our enemy,
a long, long way,
away from the sea?
